I do not know violins very well, but I do play bagpipes at the more advanced level of skill so I know that when you go to buy an instrument, you can't buy one from just anywhere and expect it to last your entire musical career. I want to learn to play so I bought this violin knowing that I would get what I paid for it. The headphone jack seems to have broken (by the second day) so now I can only get sound out of one side of my headphones (if any sound at all because sometimes there's not). I understand that this probably isn't the best quality violin out there, but it was cheap and I know that as I get better, I'll have to upgrade my instrument. So to make a long story short (providing that you'll still be able to hear yourself play) this is a good buy for beginners, but don't get too attached to it.

Comment on Black Electric 4/4 Violin/Fiddle+Gig Bag+Headphones KiT by Fyoder Larue

I concur with a lot of the reviewers here who recommend upgrades. I've upgraded everything I could, and it's a decent practice violin, no doubt. The only problem is the headphone jack on mine distorts on the G string. Given the total cost with the upgrades, and the crappy headphone jack, I wonder if I wouldn't have been better off looking for something second hand for the same amount of money or a little bit more.

Edit, 2009-03-10
Something not many have mentioned, but which is proving more annoying even than the dicky headphone jack is that this thing has a weird shape. This makes attaching a shoulder rest difficult or impossible depending on the rest. Chin rests may also be difficult to adapt. I've modified a centered chin rest by grinding a channel off at an angle in order to mount it flush with the edge, and yet have it clear the tail. I have a Wolf shoulder rest secured with elastic bands, as well as a small bean bag similarly secured.

It is an interesting violin *for the price* but if you can afford something better, even second hand, go for it.

Final Edit 2009-03-20
There are a lot of cheap Chinese electric violins for sale now. My final take on this is if you're not going to get something better 2nd hand, then get one of the models that has a more normal violin shape, at least for the bottom half. This will make it easier to change the chin rest if you want, and make possible a greater variety of shoulder rests. If I were to re-rate this, given the variety of better shaped cheap electrics available now, I would give it only two stars.

I received this for my birthday last year and was very excited to try it out. I am a percussionist by training, but thought to give a new instrument a try --- followed the instructions exactly, and no matter what I did, we could not hear the actual electronic violin. We even plugged it into an amp, thinking the headphones were glitchy, and nothing.

Had to send it back, and did not bother to send for a replacement. So disappointed.

OKAY THIS THING IS EXTRMELY BEAUTIFUL, IVE BEEN PLAYING VIOLIN FOR 7 YEARS NOW, AND SHOULD HAVE KNOWN TO STICK WITHMY ACOUSTIC, I GUESS I GET WHAT I PAID FOR. MY FIRST TIME GETTING IT THE ELECTRONICS DID NOT WORK AT ALL, AND I HAD A PAGEANT SO THAT WAS VERY UPSETTING. THE STRINGS WERE POPPING LEFT TO RIGHT AND THE BRIDGE IS WAY TO BIG, MY ADVICE IF YOU WANT TO GET AN ELECTRIC SOUND TO YOUR VIOLIN, BUY A PICKUP.
